Wednesday, September 6

Juan Sebastian Elcano completed the Magellan-Elcano expedition and became the first to circumnavigate the world in 1522.

Their main goal was to find a westward route to the spice islands.

On September 6, 1522, after 1,082 days, overwhelming challenges and deaths, Elcano and the 17 other surviving crew appeared before Emperor Charles V.

This led to more expeditions, colonization of the islands which is now called Philippines and the maritime dominance of the Spanish empire.
